Dementia-Friendly Singapore aims to set up Dementia-Friendly communities, where residents, businesses and services, and the community at large are aware of dementia and understand how to better support seniors with dementia and their caregivers. It is a place where seniors with dementia feel respected, valued, and where help is within easy reach so that they can continue to lead independent lives. Neighbours and the community, being trained and supported with resources, will be around to help where needed. It is also an environment which seniors with dementia will be able to move around with ease and safely. Such a network leads to better support for caregivers of seniors with dementia and will help to reduce the stress and fatigue they may face. A key component of the Dementia-Friendly Community is the setup of Go-To Points, which are part of the safe return system. In each neighbourhood, the community partners form a network of four to five Go-To Points, which serve as safe return points for seniors who are unable to find their way home. There, arrangements will be made to reunite them safely with their family and caregivers. In addition, the leaders at the Go-To Points can offer general assistance to seniors with dementia such as assisting in identifying and contacting the senior’s next-of-kin or family member. Having more Dementia-Friendly Communities will encourage seniors with dementia to continue to live in their own homes and go about their usual routines in the community. This is possible only because we, as neighbours, business owners, bank tellers and members of this community, understand how to support and help our seniors live independent and meaningful lives within the community.
